Fire Writing, Wood Burning & More….

Artwork burned into wood, bone, paper, leather or other materials, coming from the Greek words “pyro” meaning “fire” and “graphy” meaning “writing”. Traditionally pyrography was done in monochrome with no colour added, though nowadays colour is sometimes added. If you specifically want to see examples of pyrography with no colour or just a hint of colour you can look at my collection of monochrome pyrography examples. Horse Pyrograph Burnt Into handmade Papaer

This pyrograph was inspired by the spalting (a striped pattern in the wood that comes from a fungus) in the birch wood. You will hopefully find it difficult to see where the spalting ends and the burn lines begin. The frame is a beautifully handmade frame of New Zealand swamp wood (over 1,000 years old) made by Harry Wells
